Who Else
Who Else
Let the heavens praise your wonders, O Lord, your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones! For who in the skies can be compared to the Lord? Who among the heavenly beings is like the Lord, a God greatly to be feared in the council of the holy ones, and awesome above all who are around him? O Lord God of hosts, who is mighty as you are, O Lord, with your faithfulness all around you? - Psalm 89:5-8
Consider the questions in this passage. Who can be compared to God? Who is like Him? Who else can perform the mighty works He can? Is there anyone or anything else?
Who else is worthy?
Who else is worthy?
There is no one, only you, Jesus.
Jesus alone is worthy. No one else competes or comes close to Him. He is exalted above all things. He is better and higher than any person. He alone is worthy of our worship.
We were created to worship Him with our voices, our lives, our time, our thoughts, our attention, our resources, and our affection. And yet, so often we find ourselves taking inventory of all the lesser things we choose to focus on and exalt above God. Who else is worthy? If we are not careful, we might answer the way a child would in Sunday school (hint: the answer is always Jesus).
But don’t miss the opportunity to check your heart and mind – to recenter your worship on Christ. Stop now and consider who else/what else you may be exalting above Jesus today.
You are the infinite, God of the ages,
Yet you chose to make my heart your dwelling place.
Our minds cannot comprehend how big God is. Infinity does not sit nicely in our imagination. It is mind-boggling and altogether unimaginable. And yet, meditating on God’s unlimited power and control is so valuable to the believer. It shifts our perspective to think rightly about God and, in turn, to think rightly about ourselves.
How small and how limited we find ourselves compared to such a vast, eternal God. Even so, He has chosen to come near – not just near, but within. For those who belong to Him, God has made His home right where we are. This mystery is intimate and beautiful and brimming with God’s kindness – that the God of the ages would dwell in us.
“When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?” - Psalm 8:3-4
The God of the universe, whose very hand paints the stars in the heavens, is mindful of us? Not only that, but He sought to be united to us – long before we knew or desired Him. This is more than awareness; it is deep, sacrificial pursuit. It is perfect, covenant love.
“God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” - Romans 5:8
So what could we do but sing?
Righteous One who shed His blood
To prove to us the Father’s love;
Jesus Christ, be lifted up!
Holy, Holy!
Who else deserves our worship and devotion? Jesus died on the cross to draw us close to the Father. When we consider His sacrifice, how could we count anything else as more worthy?
“Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.” - Revelation 4:11
Who else is worthy?
Let us worship Jesus – only Jesus – with our very lives. Let us exalt Him as the one true King of our hearts. Let us offer our songs of praise to Him alone, for He alone is worthy.
